The Pz.Kpfw.IV medium tank has a classic German tank design layout - with a pre-positioned transmission. The hull is divided into three compartments: control (transmission), combat and motor

The control compartment is located at the front of the machine. It houses the main clutch, gearbox, turning mechanisms and controls, control instruments, course machine gun (except for Ausf.B and Ausf.C), radio station and workplaces of the driver-mechanic and gunner-radio.

The combat compartment is located in the middle part of the tank. It houses the cannon and the twin machine gun (in the cupola), the observation and aiming devices, the mechanisms for vertical and horizontal control of the cannon, the workplaces of the commander, the loader and the surveyor. The ammunition is located in the turret and hull.

The engine compartment is located in the aft part of the hull. It houses the engine and all its systems and the auxiliary drive of the turret rotation mechanism.
